This document offers a comprehensive description of basic scope of practice for nuclear medicine technologists

It is an update from “Competencies for the European Nuclear Medicine Technologist, 1998”, a document produced by the EANM which itself arose from work published by the BNMS on nuclear medicine technologists’ scope of practice

It includes competencies in PET-CT which as a modality didn’t exist when previous work was published.

It uses European Qualification Framework (EQF) level 6 model (equivalent to Bachelor academic degree) to define Knowledge, Skills and Competency

The core competencies for technologists are divided into 13 groups or concepts generally considered to cover the whole range of tasks

The document was peer reviewed by all members of the EANM Technologist Committee (including myself) and representatives of ANZSNM, CAMRT & EFRS.

The BNMS endorses the EANM practice guidelines for bone scintigraphy.

The EANM procedural guidelines for radionuclide myocardial perfusion imaging with SPECT and SPECT/CT have brought together several older documents to produce an excellent appraisal of the latest data available. We are very pleased that such a coherent and well edited document has been developed by the EANM. The guidelines acknowledge and take into account differences throughout Europe and are a very valuable addition to the British and American guidelines. It would be well worth keeping a copy in your department!

DaTSCAN guidance

The BNMS endorses the EANM procedure guidelines for brain neurotransmission SPECT using 123I-labelled dopamine transporter ligands, version 2

In addition to this guidance the BNMS advises the use of semi-quantitative assessment of tracer biding to compliment visual interpretation. Quantification is particularly useful in balanced striatal loss that can be seen in Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson plus syndromes. It should be borne in mind that normal binding ratios vary with patient age and gender, camera type and make, and acquisition parameters.

The BNMS endorses the EANM guidelines on VQ SPECT for PE diagnosis.

It should be noted that for departments that continue to use planar VQ imaging for PE diagnosis, the PIOPED criteria are appropriate for diagnosis.

The EANM guidelines for the dynamic and static paediatric scintigraphy are suitable for use in the UK. The only exception is that in calculating the injected activity for MAG3, DTPA and DMSA, the recommended practice in the UK is to follow the ARSAC recommendations rather than the EANM paediatric dosage card.
